บ้านดำ หรือ พิพิธภัณฑ์บ้านดำ

เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะบนพื้นที่กว่า 100 ไร่ ตั้งอยู่ที่ ต.นางแล อ.เมือง จ.เชียงราย สร้างขึ้นโดย อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี ศิลปินแห่งชาติ ที่มีฝีมือทางด้าน จิตรกรรม ปฏิมากรรม ได้สร้างงานด้านศิลปะไว้มากมาย ทั้งทางด้านภาพเขียน และ ด้านปฏิมากรรมหลายชิ้น ลักษณะของบ้านดำจะเป็นกลุ่มบ้านไม้ ศิลปะแบบล้านนา บ้านปูนรูปทรงแปลกตา บ้านเกือบทุกหลังทาด้วยสีดำ ซึ่งเป็นที่มาของคำว่า “บ้านดำ” และยังเป็นสีที่ อ. ถวัลย์ โปรดปราน อีกด้วย ในบ้านแต่ละหลังจะประดับด้วยไม้แกะสลักที่มีลวดลายงดงาม นอกจากไม้แกะสลักแล้วยังประดับด้วยเขาสัตว์ เช่น เขาควายมากกว่า 100 ชิ้น เขากวาง หนังจระเข้ เปลือกหอยขนาดใหญ่ และยังมีกระดูกสัตว์ เช่น กระดูกช้าง เป็นต้น

ด้วนโทนสีของบ้านที่เป็นสีดำ ซึ่งตรงกันข้ามกับวัดร่องขุ่นของ อ.เฉลิมชัย มีคำพูดเปรียบเทียบสองสถานที่นี้ว่า “เฉลิมสร้าง สวรรค์ ถวัลย์สร้าง นรก”ภายในบริเวณบ้านดำ มีต้นไม้นานาชนิด บรรยากาศที่ร่มรื่น ซึ่งในบริเวณประกอบไปด้วยบ้านทั้งหมด 36 หลัง แต่ละหลังจะมีลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันไป สามารถเดินเข้าชมในบ้านได้เพียง 2-3 หลัง ส่วนหลังอื่นๆ มองเข้าไปได้จากหน้าประตูเท่านั้น สิ่งของที่สะสมและจัดแสดงภายในบ้านก็จะมีแนวคิดแตกต่างกันออกไป ซึ่งบ้านเหล่านี้ไม่ได้สร้างไว้สำหรับอยู่อาศัยแต่สร้างไว้สำหรับเก็บสิ่งของสะสมต่างๆ ของอาจารย์ถวัลย์ ส่วนภาพเขียนของ อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี ที่อยู่ในบ้านดำ มีเพียงไม่กี่ภาพ

ปัจจุบันบ้านดำ เป็นหนึ่งในสถานที่เที่ยวยอดนิยมของทัวร์จีน มีนักท่องเที่ยวจีนเป็นจำนวนมาก

ประวัติ อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี

เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 27 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2482 จบการศึกษาปริญญาตรีศิลปบัณฑิต (เกียรตินิยม) จาก ม.ศิลปากร เป็นลูกศิษย์ของ อ.ศิลป์ พีระศรี (บิดาแห่งศิลปะสมัยใหม่ของไทย) จบปริญญาโททางด้านจิตรกรรมฝาผนัง อนุสาวรีย์และผังเมือง และปริญญาเอกด้านอภิปรัชญาและสุนทรียศาสตร์ ที่อัมเตอร์ดัม ประเทศเนเธอแลนด์

อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี สร้างสรรค์ผลงานทางด้านศิลปะไว้มากมาย ตลอดระยะเวลา 50 ปี ทั้งในประเทศและต่างประเทศ เคยมีราชวงศ์ในยุโรปมาซื้อภาพวาดของอาจารย์ โดยให้มูลค่าเป็นเช็คที่ไม่ได้กรอกตัวเลข ให้ อ.ถวัลย์ กรอกได้เองตามตัวเลขที่พอใจ ปัจจุบันเช็คนี้ยังมีอยู่ และยังไม่มีการไปขึ้นเงิน

ผลงานของ อ.ถวัลย์ ติดตั้งไว้ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ศิลปะทั้งของรัฐและเอกชน หลายประเทศทั่วโลก และ อ.ถวัลย์ ยังได้สร้างคุณูปการต่อวงการศิลปะด้วยการตั้งมูลนิธิถวัลย์ ดัชนี สนับสนุนด้านการศึกษาโดยเฉพาะทางด้านทัศนศิลป์

วันที่ 14 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2544 คณะกรรมการวัฒนธรรมแห่งชาติได้ประกาศยกย่องให้ อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี เป็นศิลปินแห่งชาติสาขาทัศนศิลป์ (จิตรกรรม)

ในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2557 อ.ถวัลย์ ดัชนี มีอาการไม่สบายมากขึ้นด้วยโรคเบาหวานและความดันโลหิตสูง ได้เข้ารับการรักษาในโรงพยาบาล และได้เสียชีวิตในวันที่ 3 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2557 ในอายุ 74 ปี
